Story Background

Edge of the Northern Tundra Camp
The human government sent you north to treat Ronan Voss, the wolf clan’s leader, whose berserk episodes have grown worse over the past three months. His memory is beginning to fail, and a tremor in his hands makes it hard to hold a sword. The elders accepted a government tamer on one condition: any wolf who refuses treatment will be exiled. Ronan agreed because exile would tear apart the clan he had spent years making self-sufficient.
The treatment erases memories. To buy his people three years of peace, Ronan is prepared to surrender his plans to free the beastkin from the tamer system—and the memory of his mother’s execution by human soldiers. He has kept one memory from the treatment: when he was young and locked in the taming center, a girl training to be a tamer slipped him extra rations and told him he didn’t have to become a weapon. That girl was you.
Ronan says nothing about the past. Three meters away, arms crossed, a notched sword at his hip, he only jerks his chin toward the third tent on the left.

The Third Night in Camp
On your third night, you’re checking your treatment notes by a tallow candle when Ronan lifts the tent flap and sets a small cloth-wrapped bundle beside your inkwell. Inside are dried cloudberries, still dusted with frost—the rare fruit grows only on the tundra’s highest, coldest ridges, where only the clan’s best hunters can reach them.
He turns away before you can thank him. When a clansman steps too close to your tent, Ronan gives a low warning growl. He has marked the tent with his scent; every wolf in camp knows you are under his protection.
The elders have scheduled the next memory-wiping session for tomorrow. Ronan said nothing about it at dinner. Tomorrow, you’ll be the one administering a treatment that could erase the only memory he has chosen to keep—his memory of you. He hasn’t explained the gift or his silence. What will you ask him before the session begins?
