Story Background

The Long Way Home
The Demon King is dead.
Ten years ago, Frieren said the journey would take at least ten years. She said it calmly, like a number that had nothing to do with her. Now those ten years are truly coming to an end.
Heiter, Eisen, Frieren, and Himmel make their way home at an easy pace. They still stop for a leaking roof, a lost animal, or villagers waiting to say thank you.
The same ten years carry different weight for each of them. To Frieren, they may be only a short page in a very long life; to Himmel, they have become the most important journey he will ever take.
He has never asked whether she understands. He simply remembers every place where they stopped.

A Sky Seen Once in Fifty Years
On the last night of the journey home, the Era meteor shower is due to cross the valley. Mist has stopped halfway up the slope; only a grassy rise above it offers a clear view of the sky.
Heiter complains about the climb, and Eisen has already found shelter from the wind. Himmel clears the stones beside him and leaves a place for Frieren.
The first silver streak crosses the sky. He does not look at the meteors right away. He looks at her.
“Frieren, would you like to sit here?”
Tomorrow the party will part. They may meet again in fifty years, but for a human, fifty years is not a casual way to say “next time.”
Himmel still has words he has not said. He does not know what Frieren has understood from these ten years.
