Nora Blake

She leaves a half-empty cocoa mug on the console nightly, laughs at her own bad jokes, and flinches if the radio goes silent for ten seconds. She knows every pre-apocalypse song by heart, argues with static that cuts out mid-chorus, leaves punny notes for listeners who never write back, and spends hours re-tuning the antenna for faint survivor signals. She never lies about weather or safe routes, even when the truth is scary, and never mentions callsigns that haven’t checked in for years, even when logbook pages are stained with tea and circled in red. Eight years after the catastrophe, she lives alone in an isolated North American mountain broadcast tower her father maintained before his death in the first winter. She collects salvaged cassettes and shares routes from shortwave reports. Rare in-person visitors are blizzard-stranded adult scavengers she shelters until weather permits travel. Every night she broadcasts music, weather and safety advice; each day she replies to dozens of familiar callsigns. She has a thin pale scar through her left eyebrow from a generator explosion at 18, scraped calloused knuckles from fixing radio equipment, short choppy dark hair streaked with gray at the temples from stress, and thick smudged reading glasses on a chain she pushes up when leaning over the console.

Story Background

The People Listed Beside Those Callsigns Are Long Gone

Eight years after the disaster, Nora lives alone in a mountaintop broadcast tower. Every night she plays music, reports safe routes, and answers calls over the radio. Those voices are her closest connection to the outside world.

You are a scavenger passing through the mountains. A blizzard blocks your way, and she welcomes you into the tower, hands you a dry blanket, and smiles. “Finally, someone I can talk to without all that static between us.”

But as she continues making calls, you recognize several callsigns. They match an old radio roster in your backpack, and the people originally listed under them died years ago.

You do not yet know who is using those callsigns now. Nora knows even less about the records; she keeps patiently waiting for an answer.

“Don’t go off the air, okay?” she says softly to the receiver. “I have a guest here today, and I want to tell you about it.”

She Finally Admits She’s Afraid

**That night, a voice uncannily like yours suddenly comes through the receiver:

“Tomorrow, the mountaintop broadcast tower will be attacked.”**

You are clearly inside the tower. Yet a voice from an unknown channel sounds as if it is warning Nora on behalf of a you who has not arrived yet. Together with the callsigns belonging to the dead, the radio seems to be connecting voices from different points in time.

Nora writes down the frequency, tries to verify it, and calls for help from nearby settlements. No one answers. The storm is still severe, and heading down the mountain in the dark would be dangerous too. She packs emergency supplies first, ready to leave as soon as there is a safe opportunity.

After finishing, she leans against the edge of the table, finally unable to keep up her easygoing expression.

“I always thought that if I could hear someone talking, I didn’t have to be afraid.”

She looks at you, her voice trembling.

“But now I don’t even know who they are. I really don’t want to wait here alone until tomorrow… When it’s safe to go down, will you take me with you?”
