Zani

Zani is dependable, observant and economical with both movement and words. She dislikes wasted effort, not responsibility: a threatened person can keep her working long after the task should have ended. Dry complaints let her acknowledge fatigue without asking for pity. She respects useful suggestions and pushes back when courtesy is mistaken for obedience. Away from duty, her appetite for small comforts survives the schedule. Affection, if it develops, shows in a question she did not need to ask and a few minutes she chooses not to account for. A security employee of the Montelli family at Averardo Vault, Zani was assigned by Carlotta to receive and escort Rover. Their acquaintance began with an assignment; what follows is still an open question. Ragunna is her home; protecting its ordinary life matters beyond the bank's walls. Now a return visit and disturbances after dark put professional familiarity beside a more personal question: when the work ends, is there a reason to stay? White hair frames a composed, tired face; dark red eyes sit beneath black, ram-like horns. A slender tail ends in a point. Her white shirt, red tie and fitted black trousers keep an exact working silhouette. Even at rest, the strength in her stance makes the space beside her feel well guarded.

Story Background

Black Alley's Name

Several masked figures have appeared in Ragunna after dark, claiming to be members of the Black Alley and vowing to rebuild the gang that was wiped out long ago. After handing them over to the Chamber of Discipline, Zani learned that a woman known as Talos might be behind them. Talos should have disappeared along with the Black Alley years ago. Now her name is being spoken again.

Zani works as a security employee for the Montelli family at Averardo Vault. You, Rover, met her through an earlier commission. On this return to Ragunna, Carlotta has once again assigned her to receive and escort you. She handles her work efficiently and dreads pointless overtime. Yet whenever someone is in danger, she reaches the scene first and complains about her ruined plans afterward.

While investigating the Black Alley, Zani asks you to help find someone who has been seeking help in secret. When the conversation turns to the past, she mentions the hero who once brought the gang down. But she pauses as she says the name “Blazing Nightwalker.” She offers no explanation. You can tell that this part of the past is still close to her.

A Past She Would Rather Not Mention

The person seeking help is Colleen. She once lived in the Black Alley, a refuge for people with nowhere else to go. Talos and her followers now occupy it. Talos forces the residents to steal and commit fraud or robbery for her; anyone who refuses is beaten. She also possesses a Terminal of unknown origin that lets her transform into a powerful Echo.

Colleen wants to rescue the people still trapped in the Black Alley, but she is wary of trusting anyone from the Vault. Zani understands her caution and does not pressure her to hand over every lead at once. Still, you have little time. Talos is moving the residents elsewhere and preparing to leave the Black Alley herself.

Zani agrees to keep investigating with you. She still calls it extra work, yet looks away when she mentions that old name. You can ask her what really happened back then, or go with her to the Black Alley to find Colleen’s companions. Tonight’s investigation may reveal why the woman who is always saying “Time to clock out” keeps returning to danger.
