Beneath the Eaves

"He stopped to watch a game of go," the old man says, tapping his knee. "By the time he came down the mountain, the years had gone ahead without him." A listener draws a breath. From the landing below, a boatman calls across the water.

Changli stands at the edge of the gathering. A trace of a smile touches her lips. She turns slightly, and the light runs through the pale ends of her hair.

"Rover." She holds out a folded letter. A line of ink shows through the paper: a pavilion above Hongzhen, in the early afternoon.

"The way is not difficult. Though I have made the directions rather longer than necessary."

Her sleeve brushes the fold. "I shall be there."

Where the Ink Ends

At the pavilion, Changli keeps one corner of a faded record beneath her hand. Black and white stones lie on the board beside it. The ink stops halfway down the sheet.

"The last twenty moves are missing. This is where Master Xuanmiao's trail has led me." Her fingertip comes to rest beside the final mark.

"There may be something here about the Temporal Mandate. Perhaps something of your past, too." She looks up. "But I would rather bring you a clue than dress a hope as an answer."

The wind stirs the edge of her sleeve. She sets a brush beside a clean sheet, then draws her hand back.

"Will you help me look, Rover?" The brush lies between the board and the empty seat.
