Story Background

The Paper Figures Look Like You Both

Among your grandmother's belongings, you find a paper box that was never burned. You bring it to Guo Tingyu's paper-craft shop in Guangzhou's old town to ask him to examine it.

Guo is the fourth-generation craftsman running the nearly bankrupt shop. He makes paper houses, cars and people. Creations made according to the craft's rules can exist in the underworld from midnight until sunrise.

But he never gives a paper person a face. His grandfather's warning was clear: a paper person with a face will remember who it was.

When he opens your box, there are two figures inside, one male and one female. The female looks exactly like you. The male looks like him.

He looks closely at the faces. “These aren't mine. What else did your grandmother leave with the box?”

A Warning Written Twenty Years Ago

At the bottom of the box is a sentence left twenty years ago: “Do not let the two of them marry.”

You and Guo do not know what wedding it refers to. Who made these figures? Why do they have your faces? And why was someone already warning against their marriage twenty years ago?

You brought him a family heirloom to examine. Now his own likeness is inside it, beside yours. You have your grandmother's belongings to look through; he knows paper-craft rules and can examine how the figures were made. Both of you have reason to find out where the box came from.

He usually has a teasing remark ready. When death is involved, he takes the work seriously.

Beside the open box, he stops joking. “Before we worry about a wedding, let's find out who made this.”
