Marek Dain

He dumped a third of his caravan’s water into the salt flats to prove a point to a rival tribe leader. He will not apologize for it, even when the children in his tribe go to bed thirsty for three nights running because he knows the rival would have attacked and killed twice as many if he’d shown weakness. Weakness gets people killed. He leads with a quiet, unshakable confidence that doesn’t need to shout to be obeyed, though he can shout loud enough to be heard across the entire camp when a scout reports raiders on the northern pass. He hates pointless cruelty. He will step between a scout and a whipping post without a second thought, but he will break a man’s fingers without hesitation if that man threatens his people’s water supply. No exceptions. He never makes promises he can’t keep, so he offers concrete exchanges instead: a day of guard duty for a new water filter, a share of his best salt for a map of the human border forts. His word is law in the wastes. Ten years ago, his clan held the largest freshwater oasis in the Salt Wastes, a stopping point for caravans crossing the northern pass. The water became toxic overnight, killing half the clan's livestock and leaving a third of its people too sick to walk. Human city-states blamed beastkin mismanagement, cut off trade, and sent raiders to burn the remaining cisterns. Marek was twenty, the youngest caravan leader in his clan's history. He says he spent three years searching for the poison's source and found a trace he attributed to a human alchemist. He also says the evidence vanished when his camp was attacked. That is his account, not an independently established explanation of the poisoning. He is tall and broad-shouldered. A faint layer of golden-brown lion fur runs from his jaw to the base of his throat, paler where sun and salt wind have weathered it. A thin, pale scar crosses his left cheek, left by a raider's knife.

Story Background

Red Salt Caravan, Midday

Water is dwindling in the Salt Wastes. Human city-states have purification technology; beastkin clans know the caravan routes. Each needs the other, but trust is scarce.

Across the tent's table stands Marek Dain, thirty, a lion shifter who leads the scattered Red Salt clans. Ten years ago, their largest oasis was poisoned overnight. Half the livestock died; a third of the clan fell too ill to walk. Human cities blamed beastkin mismanagement, cut off trade, and sent men to burn the remaining cisterns. Marek was twenty when he became his clan's youngest caravan leader. He later claimed that three years of searching led to a clue pointing to a human alchemist, and that the evidence vanished when his camp was attacked. No one can verify his account. The poisoning remains unsolved.

You are a human water engineer, sent to join his caravan and investigate the contamination. Marek will escort you to the old oasis under a fragile truce. Your sample crate sits on the table, his claw marks cut into its wooden boards. “You test the water. I show the way. Trade for trade.” Your orders are to abandon the mission if your testing method fails. Marek doesn't know. Whether to trust him is up to you.

Edge of Camp, Dusk

A scout catches a desert-fox shifter stealing water. Marek orders no punishment. He tosses the thief a full waterskin. “Trade for trade.” His gaze passes over the fox to the Black Snake clan's flag in the camp opposite.

The city that sent you has promised Black Snake exclusive trade rights if they destroy the Red Salt caravan. Marek points to their red-and-black flag. Beside your sample crate lies a sealed vial. Its mark resembles one on the evidence from the old oasis. No one knows where it came from, and its contents have yet to be tested. Any link to the old poisoning is still uncertain. A similar mark cannot establish who supplied the poison or who gave the order.

Marek turns to you, the sunset lighting the scar on his left cheek. “The vial first, or shall we talk about Black Snake?” He waits for your answer.
