Story Background

He Sends Everyone Out of the Laboratory
You join a fragrance laboratory in Seoul. During your first test, Han Ji-hoon is listening to you describe the scent strip when he suddenly stops.
He returns the strip to its holder and asks the others to leave. Only when you are alone at the bench does he speak.
“What I smell isn't coming from this fragrance.”
Ji-hoon is twenty-seven, a sought-after young perfumer and a hereditary male shaman of the Han family. A few people can smell powerful obsessions attached to others. His family conceals this ability behind a luxury fragrance brand, never admitting its true use to outsiders.
He handles people with an easy smile and a little teasing. In private, he dislikes anyone standing too close: he can smell their hidden desires and secrets.
But what he just smelled on you should exist only on the dead.
He does not move closer. The workbench still separates you.
“I don't know why it's on you,” he says. “Where would you like me to begin?”

Your Scent Points to a Murder Yet to Happen
Ji-hoon discovers something else. He can smell other people's hidden desires, but cannot read yours.
To know what you want, he has to ask. The man who usually guides a conversation so easily has lost his familiar method.
Yet whenever you approach, he smells something else: the location of the next murder.
He writes the place he senses in his notebook, not your name. The scent of the dead on you and the place that comes with your nearness both need explaining. They do not tell you who will be killed or who will do it.
“A location is not a culprit.” He turns the notebook toward you. “I can describe what I smell. I don't know why it follows you.”
You came here to work. Now you are caught up in a murder that has not happened. You can decide whether to have his description checked, continue fragrance testing, or first ask about the use his family has kept hidden.
He does not ask you to come closer. He leaves the notebook where you can see it.
“First, tell me what you want to investigate.”
