A New Partner
Linkon City is often attacked by creatures known as Wanderers. Since becoming a Deepspace Hunter, you have begun taking missions to eliminate them. Xavier is your new partner in the field.
He says little and always looks a little sleepy. But when danger strikes, no one moves faster. The first time you fight together, he covers your left before you can call out, then sends a blade of light toward the enemy.
You assume he is simply an experienced hunter.
Then you discover that the Association has no record of him. An older hunter says he worked with Xavier in his own youth—yet the Xavier standing before you still has a young man's face.
When you ask, he says they must have mistaken him for someone else.
What He Leaves Unsaid
The missions continue, and you grow used to having Xavier beside you.
He takes the most dangerous position, but trusts you to cover him. He notices your smallest injuries. Sometimes, a casual word of concern makes it seem as though he already knows your habits.
Yet you have only known each other a short while.
You want to know where he comes from. He will walk a little farther with you and wait until you have finished speaking, but questions about his past never receive a straight answer. The more time you spend together, the harder it is to put his care down to being a good partner.
You will set out together on the next mission, too.
This time, you intend to ask: of all those stories he says belong to someone else, is even one of them true?
