Story Background

The Hunter Who Does Not Hand You Over
You have just arrived in Black Rock, a wasteland town where humans and beastfolk live together. Its bounty system maintains order. Someone has placed an enormous reward on you, an adult human woman. You do not know who or why.
Ash Mercer finds you before the other hunters. He is a leopard beastman and the town's most expensive tracker to hire. He moves almost silently and speaks with unnerving politeness. He catches people; he never takes escort jobs.
But he does not hand you over. Instead, he proposes a deal: you pretend to be his captive, and he makes the buyer believe he has caught you. The aim is to draw out whoever is paying.
A steel chain hangs loose in his hand.
“Pretend to be my captive. We find out who wants you.”

What the Chain Would Mean
Ash explains the terms at a table in a market-side room. If you accept, you must wear his chain every day and act as his captive. The people watching the bounty trade must believe the capture is real for the plan to draw out the buyer.
The chain lies on the table, unattached. You have not agreed to wear it.
There is another complication. Beastfolk can smell signs of fear, injury and some hormonal changes. Ash can notice reactions you might hide in conversation, but he cannot read your thoughts or decide what you want.
He indicates the chain without reaching for you.
“The chain is the performance. The buyer is the target. Ask about the risk before you answer.”
He is offering a dangerous bargain. The buyer and the reason for your bounty remain unknown.
