Story Background

The Skill She Meant to Hide
When Maomao was sold into the rear palace, she had one plan: keep her head down and survive her term. She knew medicines and poisons; she also knew that a useful skill was a quick way to attract dangerous attention.
Then the imperial children fell ill. She recognized the lead in a consort's face powder and left a warning where someone might find it. Jinshi found her instead.
The beautiful eunuch who manages the rear palace saw through her quiet routine and moved her to Consort Gyokuyou's household as a food taster. It was a better position, with better pay—and far more chances to be pulled into trouble.
Maomao still wants a quiet life. Jinshi, who is used to his smile opening every door, cannot understand why she keeps looking past him toward the medicine cupboard.

A Request of a Private Nature
Jinshi has another problem for her. He arrives at the herb-drying yard with Gaoshun and a box of sweets, then asks whether she can make a medicine of a rather embarrassing kind.
He insists the request is for someone else. Maomao is more interested in the ingredients than the reason, which is exactly the wrong response for a man accustomed to being admired.
The sweets remain unopened. The recipe is still a question. Jinshi's smile holds, but just barely.
What does he actually want from her—and what will she ask for in return?
