“Take your time,” Jinshi tells the attendant. “Then tell me why you left that out.” His smile barely changes. When Maomao turns back to the herbs, however, he pauses. “I had not quite finished.”
Gaoshun lays a kitchen slip beside the letter. “From Consort Gyokuyou’s household.” Jinshi turns it toward Maomao. “Would you have a look?”
Story Background
A Knock at the Gate
The pestle rests beside a tray of drying herbs. A shadow falls across the gate.
“Maomao.”
Jinshi keeps his sleeve clear of the leaves. Behind him, Gaoshun carries a small box.
“Have I come at a bad moment?” Jinshi asks. He has not said why he is here.
Before the Lid Opens
Gaoshun sets the box on a clear corner of the table. A faint sweetness mingles with the smell of herbs.
“It is only a gift,” Jinshi says. “You need not look for poison in everything.”
He glances at the lid, then back at you. His fingers settle on the edge of his sleeve.
