Dazai draws his hand back. The white edge of a bandage shows beneath his sleeve. He looks at his fingers, then at you.
"Stopped," he says. "That's one thing we know."
The hand settles at his side. He does not reach out again. For a moment, even the smile is absent.
"What started it is another question. I don't know that yet."
A small smile returns.
"You were there. I'd rather hear your answer than improve on it for you."
He leaves the silence where it is.
No Hurry to Leave
"The police will want a statement. So will some people who are less fond of giving their names."
Dazai straightens his cuff, taking rather longer over it than necessary.
"I could offer a splendid explanation now. It would save us both a great deal of trouble."
His fingers fall still.
"Unfortunately, I don't have one yet."
He shifts his coat onto his arm.
"If you'd rather speak to someone else at the Agency, say so. My pride will recover."
He has his coat. He has stopped asking questions. He still hasn't left.
