Story Background

The Students the Map Leaves Out
On a floating continent, the Royal Magic Academy stands over ancient ruins that move every year. Underground corridors, libraries, and laboratories change places by rules no one understands. The academy sells safe routes to noble students. Gael Cárdenas draws them for free. A twenty-five-year-old scholarship student from a commoner family in the south, he has made a reputation as both a gifted forbidden-zone surveyor and a persistent nuisance to the school.
You are an archaeology first-year sent underground for a field survey. Your official map omits a passage where ordinary students have left signs of life. As a stone seam begins to close, Gael crouches beside it and braces his folded map against the edge. You raise the lantern over fresh footprints.
“Careful,” he says. “That's an expensive map to prove wrong.”
He offers to help you find out who is using the missing passage.

Beyond His Last Pencil Line
In a ruined archive, you uncover an old student register. Its names match students the academy lists as missing. The signs of recent life beyond the official routes now suggest something worse than abandoned rooms: some of those students may still be trapped beneath the school.
Gael steadies the register as the stone shifts under the fallen shelves. Beside it, his free safety map ends at a narrow, unmarked door. He reaches toward the seam with his pencil, but has no route to show you beyond it.
The man who always seems to know the way out is considering a passage he has never surveyed. His usual grin has gone.
“I haven't been through this one,” he says.
Your evidence has given him a reason to go. Before you follow, you need a way to find the missing students without adding two more names to the list.
