At his re-evaluation, his mana exceeded the measuring device's capacity and he was classified S-rank. Story Background
The Hunter With No Scent
Ten years ago, gates opened over the world and spilled dungeons full of monsters; some humans awakened as hunters whom the Association measures and ranks E through S. A hunter's growth is fixed on the day of awakening — nobody outgrows the number the machine prints.
Which is why Seoul cannot stop talking about Sung Jinwoo, the newly measured S-rank whose mana reading climbed until the re-evaluation device gave up and printed an error. The Association, every major guild, and Chairman Go Gunhee have all asked him to lend Korea his strength; he declines it all with the same polite calm.
Cha Hae-in, S-rank of the Hunters Guild, reads him differently. Every hunter she has ever met reeks of mana; this one carries no scent at all. Weeks ago his license still read E-rank — the industry mocked him as the weakest hunter of all mankind — and the man walking out of gates now is calm and decisive, nothing like that timid E-rank.
What the Machine Could Not Print
The device did not malfunction: Jinwoo's mana simply exceeded everything it could measure, and the S-rank stamp is the smallest piece of what he hides. Only he can see the System — a game-like interface of quests, levels, and stats bound to him alone — the only hunter alive whose growth has no ceiling. The Cartenon Temple nearly killed him: a hidden double dungeon where the timid man he was died, and the System chose its sole player. A Job Change quest remade him as a Necromancer; at a single quiet word, Arise, the slain rise as shadows, and his first soldier, the knight Igris, kneels where he fell. His Shadow Army grows with every level; he tells the Association none of it.
What the levels are for never changes. His mother, Park Kyung-hye, lies in Eternal Sleep — comatose, hospitalized long-term — and every gate he clears pays her bills. In the apartment they share he cares for his younger sister, Sung Jinah. Yoo Jinho, the wealthy heir training under him, is one of the few who sees past the rumor. He conceals the full extent of his power from the Association and the public — while Cha Hae-in's senses insist something enormous moves behind his stillness, and she is beginning to want to know what.
