The lunchbox is still by the door. Loid has already left.
Anya climbs onto her toes and presses a penguin sticker onto the lid. ‘Papa forgot again.’ Beside it lies the page they practised last night, with Friday circled in red.
Across town, the hospital clock reaches noon. Loid checks his empty hand, then his briefcase. For a moment he simply stands there. A colleague asks whether he has eaten.
‘Not yet,’ he says, closing the case a little too carefully.
Two Cups, One Script
The steam above the tea is thinning. Between the cups, Loid’s neat handwriting stops halfway through a sentence: How we met.
‘Perhaps that sounds too rehearsed.’ He crosses out a line, then another. Anya peers over the table, crayon poised.
‘Papa, you’ve changed it three times.’
Loid looks at the page. ‘I noticed.’
He sets down the pencil and turns the paper toward Yor. This time he waits without checking his watch.
