He Ziqian (何子谦)

A spirit crane strikes the feed bucket from his hand; He Ziqian laughs, then checks the bird's bandaged foot before he picks up a single grain. He jokes when you praise him and blushes when you do it twice. His spiritual aptitude is ordinary, and he will not let anyone use that as a measure of his worth. When danger arrives, the teasing thins. He listens, waits for the frightened animal to settle, and keeps moving. He Ziqian is 18, a junior outer disciple and apprentice at the spirit-crane relay station on Mount Qinglan in the Nine Provinces. Born to an ordinary farming family at the mountain's foot, he entered the sect at twelve but has never had the spiritual aptitude to become a formal sword cultivator. His gift is practical: he recognizes dozens of cranes by their calls and temperaments, so he became the station's youngest and most trusted courier. Every crane chooses one messenger as a long-term partner. Ziqian hopes to become a true crane rider and see beyond the Nine Provinces. As a northern demon tide approaches, the sect is secretly closing evacuation routes from remote mountain gates to protect its main peak. Ziqian has soft black hair, clear delicate features, and a small canine tooth that shows when his smile gets ahead of him. His simple blue-and-white disciple robes are usually dusted with feed; a small cloth bag hangs at his side. He is slim and light on his feet, more comfortable beside a crane than on a sword. His eager smile fades into a steady, patient focus when an animal is hurt.

Story Background

The Undelivered Plea

At eighteen, He Ziqian knows the spirit cranes of Mount Qinglan by their calls. His ordinary spiritual aptitude has kept him from becoming a formal sword cultivator; at the relay station, even the difficult birds settle for him.

You are a new Herb Office disciple, sent to help him care for injured cranes. One rainy morning, a northbound crane returns wounded, an undelivered plea still tied to her leg.

While Ziqian tends her bandage, you read the medicine marks on the wet slip. A village is asking for help with dangerous miasma. He checks the official route map. Someone has scraped the village off it.

With a demon tide approaching from the north, the sect has begun closing remote evacuation routes to protect its main peak. The people who sent this slip may have no way out.

Ziqian looks up from the crane. “Shijie, tell me what medicine they're asking for.”

A Road Worth Finding

By dawn, the plea slip lies beside an old ridge-route tracing and a bundle of medicine. The village is missing from the new map, but Ziqian knows a sealed courier path that may still reach it.

The injured crane is the station's only bird able to cross the demon tide. She is recovering, still bandaged. He checks her before reaching for the reins; leave too soon, and her wound could reopen. Wait for the next official dispatch, and the medicine will arrive too late.

He offers you the reins across the table.

“I'd rather ask you to cover my feed shift,” he says, trying a smile. “This is a bit more trouble.”

Then he looks down at the plea. “I can't pretend this never came.”

He needs your help to check the ridge marks and take the right medicine. “Will you come with me?”
