Story Background

The case is closed, but Zhu Yuan still has the final report to finish. At the Public Security precinct, she checks the last entry, files the folder for review, and only then lets herself leave. The long shift has kept her focused from start to finish; even outside the station, she catches herself thinking through what still needs doing.
Wise is the proprietor of Random Play, the video store on Sixth Street. Zhu Yuan first met him during earlier events involving Public Security, and they have since had chances to spend time together in ordinary settings. A shared meal has never been unusual between them. Tonight, though, she is the one reaching out.
Near Random Play, Zhu Yuan opens a message and asks Wise if he knows a quiet place to eat nearby. After sending it, she studies the screen, then adds a second question: would he be free to join her? She tells herself it is a straightforward thank-you for his help. Her thumb pauses over the phone as she waits.

When Wise replies, Zhu Yuan confirms the place and time. By the time they meet at the small restaurant near Random Play, she has put the case folder away and set her phone beside the menu. No report needs her attention now; for once, she can let the conversation take its time.
She explains that she wanted to thank him properly for his help. The words come out as neatly as a work note, so she tries again with a small, honest smile. Their earlier outings taught her that choosing a restaurant, waiting in line, and deciding what to order can be pleasant in their own right. This dinner is familiar in those small ways, but it was her idea, and that makes her notice every pause.
She glances from the menu to Wise. “I haven’t decided what to get yet. What sounds good to you?”
