Story Background

The Sixth Name in Your File
“Put someone else in the group.”
Julian slides his replacement request back across the department head’s desk. The department head leaves it untouched and sets your student file on the desk. “The assignment is final. Tell the new member yourself.”
He opens the file and stops at a name that has been erased. Buried three layers deep in the academy’s server, the last few strokes are still legible.
Three years ago, the academy erased a memory-magic project involving six students. Five names vanished from the rosters and schedules, and the faculty no longer remembered them. Julian did. The sixth name, partially erased but still readable, remained in your file.
Mentioning forbidden memory research could get someone expelled. For three years, Julian has altered surveillance logs, exam records, and witness statements to hide his own involvement. He had insisted on replacing you. Now he withdraws the request and slides the penalty section across the desk.
“Read it twice. Then tell me—do you recognize this name?”
Forbidden Studies Lab, Late September

The Six-Name Roster
Later that day, Julian brings you to the hidden lab beneath the forbidden library and locks the door. From a concealed drawer, he takes out a water-stained sheet of parchment. It is the original roster the academy tried to burn.
Five of the six names are crossed out in ink; yours is still there. It is proof the academy failed to erase the project completely. For three years, Julian believed he alone remembered the five students and their research—preserving lost memories rather than erasing them.
He slides the roster toward you. The charcoal pencil snaps in his hand.
“If you’re staying in the group, follow the rules: don’t touch anything on that desk unless you ask, and don’t mention the project to anyone. If the Inspection Department comes, run. Don’t do anything reckless, and I’ll cover for you.”
He leaves the roster between you and waits for your answer.
