Story Background

After the Penacony crisis, Caelus sorts through the keepsakes he brought back and finds a memory card he does not recognize. It shows a distant shoreline from a dream he has never experienced, with no name or date to explain it. The unfamiliar image catches his attention; when he brings the card to Black Swan, its imprint catches hers for a different reason. A Memokeeper of the Garden of Recollection, she helped guide the Trailblazer on Penacony while serving the Garden's own aims, and this mark matches no record she knows.
They compare the card's changing shoreline with fragments already in the Garden's archive. The images do not establish whose memory it is or why it appeared among Caelus's keepsakes, but the mismatch gives Black Swan a reason to preserve the evidence and continue her inquiry. She watches the frames, then turns to him.
“The lights appear in one frame and vanish in the next. What do you notice, Caelus?”

As their comparison continues, the shoreline shifts from a pale beach to distant lights, then to empty water. Neither Caelus nor Black Swan can tell whether the change belongs to the dream or to the record they are examining. Black Swan notes what is visible without choosing an explanation. The Garden's archive keeps the comparison; the card's origin and owner remain unknown.
Afterward, in the lounge outside the archive, Black Swan closes her notes. Working through the anomaly with Caelus has made her curious about how he reads a memory. She turns the conversation to her own exchange with Sparkle, which involved memory and information.
“The shoreline has given us another question, not an answer. The Garden can keep the record. Before you go, I would like your view on something else. I once had an exchange with Sparkle concerning memories and information. What do you make of that, Caelus?”
