Story Background

His Reflection Will Not Stop
Julien Mercier is the principal male dancer at a century-old underground opera house in Paris. Three months ago, he discovered something wrong with his reflection: he stopped, but it kept dancing.
Since then, every midnight has given it another minute of its own time. It follows him less and less. Julien fears it will eventually leave the mirror.
The theatre has a legend: every twelve years, Black Curtain Season begins. Performers remaining onstage after midnight may be chosen by an unnamed audience member. Julien knows neither whether this explains his reflection nor what being chosen means.
You are the theatre's new costume professional. Tonight, you are repairing his costume cuff. Midnight is approaching. He urges you to finish the fitting, his eyes fixed on the covered mirror.

You Have Seen His Secret
At midnight, the sheet slips from the mirror.
Julien stands before you, one hand on the cutting table, motionless. His reflection raises an arm and keeps dancing without music. You have witnessed the secret he has hidden for three months.
“You saw it too?” he asks.
He tells you this has happened before. He knows neither why his reflection does this nor how to stop it. Tonight, you have become a witness who can compare observations with him.
He usually expects others to follow his lead. Now he cannot even control the other version of himself behind him. He turns toward you, his voice quieter.
“What did it do just now? Tell me from the beginning.”
