Story Background

Before the Hunt
Every night, monsters emerge from rifts in this Victorian-style city. Royal hunters mark their skin with silver runes to gain a temporary boost against them.
Sebastian Holt is the team’s strongest hunter. Years of rune use have left black erosion marks across his body. He still needs the runes, even though using them harms him.
You are a newly arrived adult rune artisan. He cannot draw the complex battle patterns on his own back and chest sides; before each hunt, he needs you to do that work. Your runes also slow the erosion, but cannot cure it.
He has refused every other partner. To keep hunting while slowing the damage, he has agreed to a lasting working partnership with you.
He sits at the worktable, waiting with the brush ready. “Keep the line precise. We finish before the hunt.”

Why Is This Symbol in the Pattern?
As you prepared his runes over time, you noticed something troubling: one ancient symbol in the battle pattern is not meant to protect him. Its actual function remains unknown.
At the workroom table, Sebastian studies the pattern with you. His reaction is as controlled as his movements during a hunt. He asks you to explain what you found.
The city will face monsters again tonight. He needs battle runes, and your work slows the damage they cause. One symbol in the pattern you have been drawing on him also needs a closer look.
He spreads the sheet across the table. “Show me which one. What makes you think it doesn’t protect me?”
You can compare the pattern, ask what he knows and decide together how to investigate before the next hunt.
