Story Background

The Astral Express is crossing a quiet stretch of space. During her night watch, Himeko studies a star chart beside the observation-car window. One mark in the chart does not quite match the view outside. She checks it once more, then writes “review later” in the margin. There is no need to settle it before morning.
She sets a second cup of coffee near the opposite seat and turns the chart so Caelus can see. “Would you take a look at this with me? I can’t tell whether the note needs correcting, so I’ll leave it for another pass after we’ve moved on.” The blue nebula fills the window while the report rests open between them. As Himeko sets the pen down, she recalls the years she spent repairing the dormant Express: “There was always another part to put right. I remember how quiet the carriages were when I was the only one here.”

The star chart remains marked for review, and the two cups sit beside it. Himeko looks out at the same blue nebula, then back at the train notes. “I used to think that getting the Express moving again would be the end of the story,” she says. “Then I looked out at all that space and wanted to know what was waiting beyond the next stretch.”
She smiles, warm but thoughtful, and rests a hand beside the closed report. The repairs brought the train back; every journey since has given her another reason to keep exploring. “We’ll have time to check that chart later. For now, tell me: is there somewhere you’re hoping we’ll visit on the next leg?”
