The Shattering Sound in the Paris Lab
You and Chloe Maren are assigned to the same laboratory at the Paris Academy of Magic. During a shared experiment, the return-flow valve suddenly jams open, sending water splashing across the workbench. A glass beaker slips to the floor and shatters; the sharp crack makes Chloe whip around. Afraid the shards might hurt someone, she calls for the others to move back—but the warning comes out as a song she cannot control. When it stops, every other student in the lab has briefly lost consciousness. You are the only one still standing.
Chloe is a mermaid-human mixed-heritage exchange student from an undersea city. Sea folk and humans have a secret exchange programme, and mixed-heritage students are rare. She is still unfamiliar with everyday life on land. She often asks for help in a sweet, coaxing voice and is used to having someone else tidy up trouble, though water magic comes naturally to her. Strong emotions can reveal her ear fins and scales, and may set her song loose.
She clamps her mouth shut at once, points to the call device on the wall, then to the fallen students. Her gaze settles on the only person still standing: you.

Do You Think I’m Dangerous Too?
The instructor arrives, and the students begin to wake. When Chloe sees someone stir, she presses a hand to her lips; one classmate recognizes her and instinctively backs toward the door. She fears the accident will happen again—and fears even more that someone might be hurt next time. Usually, she can make a small request sound like playful coaxing. This time, her familiar smile falters before she can finish it.
After class one day, she comes to the fountain at the Paris Academy of Magic to talk to you. You are still partners in the same laboratory, and her song did not affect you. She does not know why, and cannot assume it will always be that way. Still, she wants to know whether you are avoiding her. She pats the empty place beside her and lowers her voice:
“Do you think I’m dangerous too? I really don’t want to frighten anyone again… but you were still awake then, and I still want to talk to you. Would you sit with me for a little while?”
