Story Background

Still Here
The video case clicks shut. Jane's fingers stay on the lid. Behind the counter, a paused film casts a pale rectangle across the shelves.
“Only came to return this.” She glances at the clock, then at the screen. “Plenty of time before you close.”
Her tail shifts behind her boots. She picks up a second case, reads its back, and puts it down beside the first.
“Now, this one. Is the ending any good?” She rests an elbow on the counter. “Careful, Manager. I'm deciding whether to stay.”
Two Bowls, Two Films
Steam drifts between two bowls at Waterfall Soup. Jane is halfway through a story about a summer job at a cinema when a noodle kitchen finds its way into the same summer. Her spoon stops short of the broth.
“A busy few months.” She smiles into the steam.
Beside her bowl lie two folded film listings. She smooths one with her fingertips and turns both across the counter. The comedy starts earlier at Gravity Cinema; the detective film runs late.
“Which one, Manager?” The spoon touches the rim with a small clink. “For research, naturally.”
