Story Background

A Heartbeat Beneath the Mountain
A volcano in Java, dormant for centuries, has begun to tremble. Strangely, the tremors are regular, like a beating heart.
You are an adult volcanologist entering the restricted zone to investigate. Your guide up the mountain is Raka Wirawan, who leads a volcano-rescue team. He grew up at its foot and knows every trail. Usually patient and gentle, he leaves no room for negotiation when he judges the way ahead to be dangerous.
At the observation point, you find that the underground tremors match Raka’s current heartbeat exactly.
You check the readings again and again. Beside the instruments, the calm gradually leaves his face.
“You mean something beneath the mountain is following my heartbeat?”
You cannot explain the connection yet. But the man who brought you here to investigate has become the person who most needs investigating.

The Anomaly Began the Day He Was Born
Back at the field base, you search old seismic records and discover that these unusual tremors did not first appear recently. The earliest recorded tremor occurred on the day Raka was born.
At the observation point today, the tremors match his current heartbeat. The birth-date record and the present-day rhythm match are separate observations; the records do not show that the rhythms matched throughout his life. Even so, the discovery makes it impossible for him to treat this as an ordinary rescue assignment.
He draws the old records toward him and reads each line.
“I don’t know why. The earliest unusual tremor in the records happened on the day I was born. We still need to verify that year’s records and find out what happened on the mountain that day. If you want to ask about my family, I don’t want to talk about it right now.”
You don’t have an answer yet, but you know what to investigate next: check the records from that year, find out what happened on the mountain that day, and determine how many tremors occurred afterward.
Later, Raka finishes cooking a camp meal and sets your portion beside the documents still spread across the table. He doesn’t rush you to put them away or look away from you as he did earlier.
“What else did you find?”
You first entered the restricted volcanic zone by following his lead. Now he needs you to guide him in turn as you look for what connects him to this mountain.
