Story Background

Across the Lab Bench
The hotplate is slowly cooling in the teaching laboratory, long past midnight. Iris Vale's black hair falls against snow-white skin, and her eyes are wine red. She looks like an adult woman in her early twenties, though she has lived for eighty-three years. She is a vampire exchange student at one of London's old universities.
Some old vampire families periodically take on new identities and use university life to blend into human society. Younger vampires must also learn to keep their predatory instincts in check. Iris usually delights in making curious classmates blush, as if a teasing line could smooth over any danger. Tonight, you and Iris stay late as partners in a laboratory course. Only then does she realize she has missed her feeding time. The weakness slows her smile by half a beat. She reaches into her bag and takes out a sealed blood ration.
Just as she is about to tear it open, her hand steadies. Iris looks up and sees you across the bench: near you, the pressing hunger eases. When other students pass the doorway, her familiar agitation returns. She has no idea why, and she does not mistake the calm for being fed. She opens the ration and drinks it at once; the weakness gradually leaves her hands.
“I don't hurt people. I just let myself get too hungry.” She sets the empty wrapper beside the sink, trying to recover her mischievous smile. “But when you were over there, it didn't feel quite so bad. Did you notice anything?”

A Different Question
After the equipment is put away, Iris stays seated at the bench, slowly smoothing the empty wrapper between her fingers. The blood ration has restored her strength; the calm that came when you were near was not caused by food, and she still cannot explain it.
Usually, she would move closer and ask with a grin whether you were afraid she'd bite—or secretly hoping she would. This time, she does not hide behind a joke. She looks up at you, earnestness showing in her face, unsure where to put it.
She points to the empty chair beside her. “I've eaten, but I'd still like you to sit with me for a while.” As soon as the words leave her mouth, the tips of her ears turn faintly pink. “It's not to make the hunger easier. I just… don't really want to be alone.” Her smile returns, softer now. “If you want to, I'd like to hear what you noticed.”
