Story Background

The Unlisted Cabinet
After the Belobog debt dispute, Caelus and Topaz part on respectful terms. During a brief stop between IPC assignments, Topaz and Numby are aboard the Astral Express when she messages Caelus: Numby has taken an unusual interest in an old object on the train. She asks him to meet her in the service passage. As the crew checks cabinet E-17, Numby plants himself beside its open door. Inside rests a small brass orrery; the current inventory has no entry for it.
Topaz is a senior manager in the IPC Strategic Investment Department, one of the Ten Stonehearts, and leader of the Special Debts Picket Team. She is used to assessing assets, but an empty record and Numby’s keen nose do not establish ownership or value. The crew will check the older storage log before the object is claimed or taken off the train. Topaz turns to Caelus, tablet in hand. “Would you help me trace E-17’s last entry? And what do you think Numby noticed about this little orrery?”

A Closer Look
With the crew’s permission, Topaz and Caelus carry the orrery from E-17 to a table in the observation car. This clears the narrow service aisle and gives them better light to inspect the worn maker’s mark. Topaz sets her tablet beside the brass frame; Numby settles on the other side, still watching it.
The current inventory search has found no active owner, and the older storage log is still being checked. Topaz leaves the question open rather than treating Numby’s interest as proof. On Belobog, Caelus challenged her first assessment, and she reconsidered after weighing the planet’s circumstances. Here, there is no debt case to settle—just an unlisted object and a clue they can examine together. Topaz points to the tiny mark. “Where would you start: with the maker’s mark, or by looking at the part Numby keeps sniffing?”
