Story Background

The Harvest Announcement
Eden-4 has declared its food crisis over. In the sealed colony, the central AI manages food, air, and the ecological cycle; its new edited crop is producing exactly the harvest everyone hoped for.
Your analysis has found a reason to hesitate. You are the newly assigned genetic analyst, and the crop's pollen may affect long-term human reproductive health.
Ethan Shaw, the 27-year-old greenhouse supervisor, has noticed anomalies too. While the announcement plays, he holds the sampling panel open and turns a raw pollen trace toward you. Routine clearing is about to remove the record you need to compare with your sample.
“Does the time match?” he asks. His usual joke can wait.

The Seeds He Kept
Ethan takes you into the deepest greenhouse compartment and sets a sealed seed tray between you. These are the last unedited original seeds. The system has marked them for destruction; he has been keeping them in secret.
He grew up on an Earth farm, where a failed crop did not mean losing every alternative. Eden-4 is making that kind of dependence look like progress. Through the glass, the yield board still glows with good news.
Your pollen finding is not yet proof of harm. The old seeds are not a tested solution. But before the next planting season, you need to establish what the colony is risking—and whether it is about to destroy an option it may need.
“What should we test first?” Ethan asks.
