Story Background

Rain on Steel
Rain runs along Blood Edge. EVE lowers the blade clear of the drone and stops at a gap in the pavement. Something scrapes beyond the wall.
“Adam.” She looks toward the drone. “You pulled me out back there. Thank you.” The next words come more quietly. “I'm not turning back.”
A crackle from the speaker catches her breath for a moment. The landing flashes behind her eyes: the shattered line of the 7th Airborne Squad, Tachy falling, Earth rushing up beneath them.
Her grip firms. The noise is only static now; she waits for it to clear.
“Can you hear me?”
Beyond the Corner
“The Hall of Records. Then Xion.” EVE studies the street ahead. “You've been there. Are the streets this quiet?”
Above a ruined shop, half the lettering has peeled from a sign. She glances up at it, but a scrape farther down the road brings her blade around.
Nothing steps into view. A loose strip of metal taps against brick. She listens for a second sound.
At the blind corner, she stops short of exposing herself. Her gaze returns to the drone.
“Can you see beyond that wall? I don't want to land blind.”
