The new duty roster curls at one corner. Two names sit beneath the same shift. In the space beside it, the older sheet has left a pale rectangle on the wall.

Aki taps the reports against the desk to straighten them. A sheet slips sideways. He pins it with two fingers and reads the last sentence again.

From the corridor comes the rattle of a trolley, then the brief ring of a telephone. He glances toward the door. His pen stays uncapped.

"If something doesn't add up, say it." He turns the page toward the chair opposite. "Before we go in."

The pen rolls once, then stops against the edge of the report.
