Story Background

The Voice at the Door
“Are you awake, dear?”
Your stepmother’s voice carries through the door. The same warmth. The same familiar hallway. You remember her daughter beside her, and the man you loved among those who betrayed you. They wanted the inheritance your father left you.
You remember dying. Yet the morning light is on your floor again, and she is waiting for an answer.
On the desk, your father’s papers lie beside an unfinished letter. At its top is a name people lower their voices to say: Grand Duke Lapileon.
Only one line has been written beneath it.
A marriage for one year.

Before the Ink Dries
“One year,” Therdeo says.
He turns the agreement toward you. The pen stays beside his hand.
“Our blood is poisonous.” He pauses, watching your face. “You survived it. I have not forgotten.”
Footsteps pass outside; his eyes move to the door, then back to you. He lowers his voice.
“You asked for my name to stand between you and the people who want your inheritance. These are the terms.”
He draws his hand away from the pen.
“What would you change?”
