Story Background

A Face Like Yours Appears on the Scanner
You join a traditional-theatre digitization project in Yogyakarta as an adult sound designer, recording performance audio. Your collaborator, Arga Pranata, is a shadow puppeteer and archaeology graduate student.
His family preserves ancient puppets never publicly performed. Sometimes they act out events that have not happened. The first in his family to receive modern archaeological education, Arga believes prophecy is an unexplained psychological phenomenon.
During the first scan, a new female figure appears on the scanning table. It was not in the collection before.
The puppet has your face.
Arga checks the inventory, then looks at you. His low voice usually carries a smile as he watches your reactions. This time, he stops teasing.
“It wasn't here before.”
You came to preserve an old theatre collection. Now you must first find out why a new character with your face has appeared among it.

Seven Nights End with Him Killing You
For seven consecutive nights, the puppets perform stories of your future with Arga. However the stories unfold, the ending is the same: he kills you himself.
This is more than an extra puppet on the scanner. You try to change the prediction, but reality moves closer to that ending with each attempt.
Arga compares the audio, performance records and events after each attempt. He can no longer brush aside the danger as a psychological phenomenon, nor accept the puppets' ending as the outcome you should submit to.
“Before trying anything new,” he says, “let's finish checking what happened after the last attempt.”
You have the audio records; he knows the family puppets. You can examine changes in each performance and how they appeared in reality. Continuing the inquiry, pausing tests or first asking him to explain what his family knows are choices to discuss now.
He sits across the worktable, far more serious than when you met.
“I've seen the ending,” he says. “I still don't know why things lead there.”
